Obituary of Gene Willcockson

Gene Willcockson, 89, of Lamar, Missouri, former long-time resident of Leeton, Mo., died early Saturday morning, August 26, 2017, at Truman Healthcare & Rehabilitation, Lamar.

He was born February 10, 1928, in Chilhowee, Mo., the son of Everett Barton Willcockson and Stella (Mosley) Willcockson. On May 14, 1949, in Clinton, Mo., he married Ruby Helen Chambers and she preceded him in death on February 18, 2012.

Mr. Willcockson was a custodian and bus driver for the Shawnee Mound school district for 6 years and then at the Leeton school district for 48 years, retiring in 2004. He always planted a very large garden and enjoyed his old John Deere tractors. He liked to fish and go coon and squirrel hunting.  

Survivors included 4 children, Shirley Willcockson, Springfield, Mo.; Larry Willcockson (Yevonne Montoya), Albuquerque, New Mexico; Susan Griffitt (Bill), Lamar, Mo.; and Cheryl Anstine (Joe), Chilhowee, Mo.; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; a brother, Carl Willcockson (Catherine), Clinton, Mo.; a sister, Clara Slagel (Bob Bush), Columbia, Mo., and numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Ida Mae Thurman.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 30, 2017, at the Hadley Funeral Home, Windsor, Mo., with Rev. Murlin Anstine officiating. Burial will be in the Mineral Creek Cemetery, Leeton, Mo. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening at the funeral home from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. and before the service from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. The family suggests memorial contributions to the Alzheimer’s Association and contributions may be left in care of the funeral home.
