Obituary of Thelma Swigert

Thelma Lucile Swigert, 85, of Windsor, Missouri died Sunday morning, July 21, 2019, at her home in Windsor.

She was born March 2, 1934 in Clinton, Missouri, the daughter of Elmer Benton Paxton and Elsie Lucile (Wirsig) Paxton. On November 25, 1954, she married Jack Swigert in Leeton, Mo., and he survives of the home.

She was a 1951 graduate of Norris High school.  After graduation she attended Central Missouri State College and received her teaching certificate and taught at Harrisonville #9 school. After their marriage, Jack and Thelma moved back to Leeton where they had a family farm. In 1964 the family moved to Windsor where Thelma worked at Citizens Bank. She earned her LPN degree and worked at Golden Valley Hospital, for her brother-in-law, Dr. Cy Smith, and then for Dr. Richard Witte in Windsor for almost 30 years. Thelma and Jack enjoyed square dancing and playing Pitch. Many family trips to the lake to camp and boat were enjoyed over the years. Camping at the Missouri State Fair was an annual tradition. “Grandma Jack,” as she was affectionately known to many children in addition to her own grandchildren, was an excellent cook and seamstress. She liked any kind of handwork and enjoyed reading and special knit nights with her sisters, nieces, and granddaughters. She loved her family and friends and they were always welcome in her home and there was always room at her table. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Windsor.

In addition to her husband, Jack, she is survived by 3 children, Steve (Vicki) Swigert, Kingston, Oklahoma; Marilyn (David) Norfleet, Windsor, Mo.;  and Scott (Kristen) Swigert, Windsor, Mo.; 7 grandchildren, Jonathan (Erin), Whitney, Kacey (Mike), Allyson (Josh), Kimberly (Rusty), Makayla, and Barr; 10 great grandchildren, Olsyn, Paxton, Nash, Rian, Evyn, Henley, Harper, Salvatore, Enzo, and Giovanni; a brother, Larry Paxton, Windsor, Mo.; a sister, Venita (Bob) Houk, Leeton, Mo.; many loving nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great nephews and a great-great-niece. She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant brother, Dwight Elmer Paxton; a sister, Kay Womble; a sister-in-law, Toni Paxton; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Ruth and Cy Smith and Bill and Jean Wallace.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m., Thursday, July 25, 2019, at the Hadley Funeral Home, Windsor, with Rev. Justin Wright officiating. Burial will be in the Laurel Oak Cemetery, Windsor. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening at the funeral home from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. The family suggests contributions to the Swigert Family International Agriculture Scholarship (checks payable to UCM Foundation) or to Calvary Baptist Church and may be left in care of the funeral home.
