Obituary of Ruth (Failer) Buell

Ruth Leona (Failer) Buell, 97, of Windsor, Missouri died Monday morning, February 3, 2020, at her daughter’s home in Jonesborough, Tennessee. She was born August 16, 1922, in Windsor, Mo., the daughter of John Raymond Shepherd and Ola Belle (Tedder) Shepherd. On August 17, 1942, in Sedalia, Mo., she married Grover Daniel Failer. Together they had three children and he preceded her in death on January 24, 1972. On June 20, 1981, in Windsor, she married Oklin William Buell and he preceded her in death on December 4, 1996. Ruth worked for the International Shoe Factory in Windsor and had also worked for the Levi plant in Sedalia. She was co-owner and operator of a filling station and bait and tackle and convenience store at Cole Camp Junction with her husband Grover for over 20 years. She also worked at Vincent’s Shoe Store in Windsor for several years, retiring in 1988. She was a member of the Windsor United Methodist Church. She helped with dinners, blood drives, enjoyed Wednesday night meals with her church family and loved getting Pastor Pete’s hugs. She was an avid cross-stitcher and liked working jig saw puzzles and watching the Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy game shows. She was a Kansas City Royals fan and also liked red birds, hummingbirds, and spending time with her cherished family. Survivors include 3 children, Bonnie Ward, Windsor, Mo., Carolyn Gillenwater (Rick), Jonesborough, Tennessee, and Jim Failer (Carolin), Calhoun, Mo.; a step-daughter, Connie Holland, Vacaville, California; 18 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Jean Rickets, Indepencence, Mo.; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband Grover and husband Oklin, she was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Tim Ward; a step-son Terry Buell; a grandson, Jason Patterson; a great-granddaughter, Isabelle Failer; 2 brothers, Leslie Shepherd and Ray Shepherd; and several brothers and sisters-in-law. Ruth fell ill with respiratory failure in late August, 2019 while vising family in Tennessee. She was hospitalized most of September and was placed on in-home hospice care in October. Bonnie, Jim, and Carolin made the trip to Tennessee several times to assist with Ruth’s care and visit. It was our honor and special time to care for our gentle, kind, and loving mother, grandmother, and friend. Thankfully, after her hospital discharge, she remained relatively pain free. Ruth felt very blessed to have been able to live independently until this illness. She still did her own shopping, cooking, cleaning, and drove her car locally (safely). She could thread a needle and cross-stitch 5 to 6 hours a day. Simply amazing! She will be missed. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, February 10, 2020, at the Hadley Funeral Home, Windsor, with Pastor Pete Hill officiating. Burial will be in the Laurel Oak Cemetery, Windsor. The family will receive friends before the service from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home. The family suggests contributions to the Windsor United Methodist Church or the Laurel Oak Cemetery in care of the funeral home.
