Obituary of Betty Mills

Betty Mills, 92, of Calhoun, Missouri, died late Tuesday evening, September 7, 2021, at Jefferson Gardens in Clinton, Mo. She was born November 30, 1928, in Sedalia, Mo., the daughter of Paul Lee Burns and Martha Frances (Steele) Burns. On February 8, 1951, she married James Gordon Mills in Warsaw, Mo., and he preceded her in death on February 20, 2007. Betty was a 1946 graduate of Calhoun High School. After working briefly in Sedalia and Clinton after high school, she settled back in the Calhoun area on what would become the family farm when she met Gordon and they married. She then worked at the Citizens State Bank in Calhoun and as a bookkeeper and secretary for the Calhoun School District, retiring in 1984. She was a member of the Calhoun Baptist Church. She enjoyed helping Gordon on the farm and raised a garden every year and canned fruits and vegetables, especially apples in the fall. She took good care of her family, helping with her siblings when they were young and then raising her children and taking care of her grandchildren. Survivors include 2 sons, James Kenneth Mills (Diane), Calhoun, Mo.; and Michael Lynn Mills (Kim), Clinton, Mo.; a daughter, Shirley Kaye Mertz (Rick), Clinton, Mo; 6 grandchildren, Jolene Soorus (John), Jeremy Mertz, Tonya Keller (Tony), Kendra Mills, Cameron Mills and Mia Mills; 4 great-grandchildren, Gunner Barker, Cameron Mertz, Brylee Keller, and Mason Keller; 3 step-great-grandsons, Austin, Dustin, and Brandon Soorus; a sister, Patricia “Pat” Kelley, Fulton, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by 3 brothers, William “Bill” Burns, Charles Burns, and Robert “Bob” Burns. Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday, September 11, 2021, at the Hadley Funeral Home, Windsor, with Rev. Joey Conway officiating. Burial will be in the Calhoun Cemetery, Calhoun. The family will receive friends Saturday before the service from 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home. The family suggests contributions to the Calhoun Cemetery in care of the funeral home.
