Glover Eldon “Red” Schafer, 88, of McPherson, Kansas, died Wednesday, January 12, 2022, at his son’s home in Windsor, Missouri. He was born February 2, 1933, in Marquette, Ks., the son of Herbert Schafer and Dula Josephine (Yowell) Schafer. On March 21, 1964, he married H. Nadine Hammer in Aurora, Colorado, and she preceded him in death on March 28, 1995. Red was a 1952 graduate of McPherson High School. Following his service in the United States Air Force, he worked for the City of Aurora. He then worked at Keystone Railways for several years. He and Nadine moved back to McPherson after retirement, and he enjoyed 15 years as a Wal-Mart greeter. He especially enjoyed being Santa Clause each year for the children who visited the store. He was a member of the McPherson VFW and American Legion. Survivors include 2 sons, Eldon L. Schafer (Kathy), Windsor, Mo., and James V. Schafer (Lorrie), Kiowa, Co.; a daughter, Nancy Schafer, Lawrence, Ks.; 5 grandchildren, Kodie Schafer, Lacee Schafer, Shyloe Schafer, Julianne Schafer, and Rikki Schafer; 4 step-granddaughters; 3 great-grandsons and a great-grandson on the way; 3 great-granddaughters; a sister-in-law, Phyllis Schafer; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Marvin Schafer and Marion Schafer and a sister, Doris Schroeder. A celebration of Red’s life will be held at a later date.
