Please share a memory of Mildred J. to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Mildred J. Reed, 95, of Lenexa, Kansas, formerly of Windsor, Mo., passed away Thursday, May 5, 2022, at the Lakeview Village nursing facility in Lenexa, Kansas. Mildred was born February 10, 1927, in Chilhowee, Mo., the daughter of James and Laveta (Cornwell) Loveall. She was raised in Chilhowee in a family of three brothers and four sisters and was a graduate of Chilhowee High School. On February 12, 1946, she married Bill Reed in Garnett, Ks. They were married 58 years until Bill's death in 2004. Mildred and Bill moved a total of 18 times during their marriage. She said she always missed her favorite home which was a brick ranch house in Kansas City. With all these moves, she had numerous jobs as well over the years. She worked in factories in Warrensburg and Windsor, a school cafeteria, ran a small grocery store (Paulo grocery), helped Bill run a dairy farm, helped maintain Windsor City Park, and worked at Clinton Wal-Mart. She even helped Bill drive an 18-wheeler for a few years. She was a hard worker, but her favorite job was raising her children and being around her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. After Bill's death, she moved to Neosho, Mo., to be closer to her daughter, Tammy, and her granddaughter, Amie Swisher and husband Darren. While in Neosho, she enjoyed spending time with her great-grandchildren, Dayla, Bennett, and Violet Swisher. Her last few years were spent in Overland Park, living with her son, Albert, and later at Lakeview Village nursing facility. While living with Albert, they enjoyed country music shows and frequenting the casinos, where Mildred was quite often a winner! She had grandchildren and great-grandchildren in the Overland Park area as well as always enjoyed seeing her family. She enjoyed visiting friends in the area and seeing the former neighborhoods where she lived. Among her favorite childhood memories were those of her movie star uncle, Harry Holman, who was in "It's A Wonderful Life," and many Shirley Temple movies. She said the whole town of Chilhowee would turn out to see her uncle when he came to town. One of her favorite moving stories was on the move to Colorado. While pulling a small trailer behind their Ford, they were unable to make it over a mountain and, after several attempts, had to back down. They hooked up the Ford behind a road maintainer and finally got them over and on to their destination. Mildred is survived by 2 sons, Thomas Reed, Tampa, Florida, and Albert Reed, Overland Park, Ks.; 8 grandchildren, Scott, Tim, Stewart, Corey, and Jamie Reed, Amie Swisher, and John and Josh York; and 9 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Reed; infant son, Ronald Lee Reed; daughter, Tammy Marie Collins; twin sister, Mary Hubbard; sisters, Marie Casada, Helen Simpson, and Naomi Webster; and brothers Art, James, and Leroy Loveall. Graveside services will be 3:30 p.m., Monday, May 9, 2022, at the Laurel Oak Cemetery, Windsor. The family will receive friends before the service from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the Hadley Funeral Home, Windsor. The family suggests contributions to the Windsor Farrington Park in care of the funeral home.
